In a video conference on Saturday with lawmakers, Volodymyr Zelenskyy (President of Ukraine) asked Congress for more lethal aid, more planes, and more sanctions to prevent Russian oil exports. Washington considers increasing aid to Ukraine in order to stop a Russian invasion.
Zelenskyy was part of a Zoom conference call that included more than 285 senators, House members, and representatives. Zelenskyy was wearing a green military T-shirt and spoke without a Ukrainian Flag. He appealed to the U.S. legislators for more support.
Sen. Steve Daines (R-Mont.), said, “He spoke from the heart.” said. He stated that Zelenskyy had requested that the skies be sealed with a no-fly zone.
The meeting occurs as NATO rejects Zelenskyy’s request for a no-fly zone over Ukraine to provide protection for the Ukrainian people. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg cautioned against having allies planes within Ukrainian airspace. This could result in a new war.
Ukraine does not belong to NATO and is therefore not subject to Article 5 of NATO. This states that all NATO members will help a NATO member country if it is attacked.
A Senate source said that Zelenskyy asked for more aircraft, and expressed concern at the United States’ refusal to send planes to other NATO countries.
Zelenskyy said that Poland was open to sending planes, especially Russian-made MiGs that are able to be flown by Ukrainians. The U.S. hasn’t signed off because it fears that it will be seen as an escalation. Fox News source.

A U.S. defense official stated that the U.S. did not prevent European countries from sending warplanes to Ukraine.

Kaine said that he’d never seen “a greater gap between America and our allies” prior to the invasion.
