Did Russia Use Illegal Vacuum Bomb During Ukraine Invasion?

Officials in Ukraine claimed that Russia used an illegal weapon during the war. They stated that the International Criminal Court was now investigating Russia.

Oksana Markarova, Ukraine’s ambassador to America, told reporters Monday at Capitol that Russia used a vacuum bomb during its invasion in Ukraine. This is a violation of international law.

Markarova said that they used the vacuum bomb outside of a closed-door congressional meeting, where members received intelligence briefings about the war. ”

ABC News reported on Monday that Karim Khan (the chief prosecutor for the ICC) opened an investigation into possible violations of the Convention “as fast as possible” on the same day.

According to Reuters, a “vacuum bomb” is a thermobaric weapon capable of more destruction than conventional bombs. It is capable of vaporizing people by absorbing oxygen in a given space.

CNN reported that a Russian vehicle carrying thermobaric weapons was seen traveling through Ukraine. There are no indications that such a weapon was used, however.

Officials stated that the White House still needs confirmation from international investigators before it takes any action.

Jen Psaki (White House Press Secretary), stated Monday that “if it were true, it would potentially be considered a war crime.” She stated that President Biden would “look forward to being part of that conversation.”
